The White Lion pub in Baldock, Hertfordshire

Working Together in Perfect Harmony

The White Lion pub in Baldock, Hertfordshire is a successful music pub – whether the music is live or via the jukebox – the customers love it.

Landlady Margaret Patterson has worked hard to bring people into her traditional pub during the week. “I believe you need to give people a reason to leave their homes and come into the pub and stay for a few drinks,” she says. That’s why she installed a jukebox. That’s also why she has introduced a live music night on a Thursday, which has been become legendary for its ‘Open Mic’ event. This event really draws in the crowds. Anyone is welcome to have a go, taking the microphone for ten minutes or three songs. It attracts a number of local artists who showcase new material or rework classic hits. Normally, there are a wide number of genres covered; everything from mainstream chart covers to Rock, Indie and Ska. That is partly why it is so popular with the customers, because there is always something for everyone – just like the jukebox.

“the perfect jukebox for her pub to increase the profits”

Margaret has worked closely with Hire Jukebox to create the perfect jukebox for her pub and to increase the profits. The jukebox features every UK top 40 chart hit ever released. The music can be easily selected from a wide range of genres including Irish, Pop and Country. Categories also include hits from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s etc. So nobody will be left disappointed when searching for their favourite music. The White Horse jukebox not only works well during the week on nights when there’s no live music but it us also used before, after and during the Open Mic event. Margaret told Hire Jukebox how good some of the local bands were and how they had built up quite a following. So we suggested recording these bands and putting their tracks on the jukebox too.

Record local bands and put their tracks on the jukebox too!

The site was thrilled and amazed that this could be possible. They started recording the local acts and kept the songs that went down the best with the locals. Hire Jukebox then uploaded these songs onto the jukebox, along with some local bands’ studio recorded material that was passed on by either CD or sent as an mp3 file. As the jukebox is already connected online to receive new music automatically every week, Hire Jukebox was able to upload the music within a few hours and place it under the Venue Favourites category – allowing the customers to find it easily. There is no extra cost for this and Hire Jukebox was keen to encourage this service to be used, as we know through experience it can help maintain customer interest and importantly increase cashbox levels.

“Hire Jukebox has tailor-made the jukebox so that it is perfect for the pub”

Through doing this and also responding to a list of other customers requests – such as adding more music from classic artists such David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and more popular modern day bands like The Vaccines – Hire Jukebox has tailor-made the jukebox so that it is perfect for the pub. As a result, cash box levels have increased by over 30 per cent and Margaret’s customers have even more reason to leave their homes and come out to the pub and stay for a few drinks.
